Biomass Energy: Political, Technical, Economic and Environmental Aspects
An energy scenario to the middle of the 21st Century will be presented. Is the world short of energy? Absolutely not! So what is the energy problem? It is that petroleum and natural gas and even coal supplies are finite and will one day be exhausted; plus the generation of Greenhouse gases, an undesirable consequence when burning fossil fuels that leads to Global Warming.
The world’s energy supplies can be supplemented with renewable forms such as solar energy in all its forms---biomass, solar heating, solar PV, wind, etc. The political, technical, economic and environmental aspects of biomass fuels will be discussed. While biomass fuels offer great potential, a number of concerns will be discussed. These include higher food-grain prices caused by the increased grain demand for biofuels, increased land requirements that may have an adverse effect on food production, increased water requirements for irrigation, etc.
Biomass resources are abundant and renewable and offer tremendous potential to supplement fossil fuels. But the success of biofuels is NOT guaranteed. Other forms of renewable energy such as solar heating, solar PV and wind energy should be pursued also.
